There are numerous contributors besides Loudon, but this remains one of his greatest books, gathering together plans for everything from workmans' cottages to country villas, and for their outbuildings and interior furnishings. Lucidly written and fascinating to read. This copy has some waterstaining, an 1833 signature (John Smythe) on the first blank page, the same name stamped in a small circle on the title page, a tiny wormhole on the fore edge from page 913 through page 957, an inked note on the last page, as well as some page browning and soil. A solid copy, internally good to very good, and recently recased in quarter tan calf and marbled paper on boards, with a compartmented spine and a claret leather title label. Small octavo, unpaged (approximately 180pp.).The book was the property of James Hall (probably of Jamestown, New York), as noted on the front free endpaper, and presented by a Mrs.Street and Lizzie. He is mentioned, though, in "Contributions of the Old Residents' Historical Association, Lowell, volume 3., issued in 1887. Most of the inscriptions that follow are dated May 6, 1861, and are dividerd between residents of Jamestown and graduates of the class of 1861 and others connected to Lowell High School in Lowell, Massachusetts -- the first co-ed high school in the U.S. From Jamestown, signers include several other Halls, Sophie J. Davis, Mary Marvin, Addie Butler, S.M. Lowry, Ellen Hall, William A. Keiler, William Proudfit, Chas. S. Keeler, Agnes A. Gillis, J. Ernest Shaw, and L.W. Davis. In Lowell, signers include J.S. Russell (teacher of mathematics), F.W. Kittredge, C.C, Chase (school principal), Stephen H. King, Lissie M. Street, James O, Scripture (teacher). Owen Street, Mary F.Eastman (head of the female department of the school), John J. Colton, Edward B. Holt, George B. Allen, George F. Woodward, Charles F. King, Warren Chase, Charles Lowell, Henry W. Wilson, Frederic A. Hinckley, and Joseph A. Sladen. A blotter, a ruling sheet and a receipt for an 1862 subscription to "The Independent" are laid in. Octavo, 124 double pages of information about treees, shrubs and vines, followed by xxiii pages containing a bibliography, a blooming chart, and indexes of botanical names in English and Spanish. The entire book is written in both English and Spanish, with text in both languages on the same page. There are four color plates, plus profuse b/w drawings of plants. The book was printed in Havana by Seoane, Fernandez y Cia. The book is inscribed on the half-title by Nancy Allen Ogden (1910-2002), who lived in Havana from 1936 to 1960, and who is credited in the foreword as having done the cover design, the endpapers and color plates, as well as many of the sketches. Endpapers faintly browned else very good to fine in deep green cloth with a paste-on title label, slightly shelf-rubbed. Small octavo, 8 1/8" x 6 1/4", unpaged. The colored endpapers show the four Warner children and their rabbit Increase, and the book is filled with Tasha Tudor's full-page and in-text illustrations in color and b/w of the rabbit who not only is discovered to be a female but moves into the house. The book is fine and withut markings or wear of any kind, and is bound in yellow cloth with the title and a profile of a rabbit on the cover in black, as well as a spine title in black, showing no wear at all. The picxtorial dustjacket shows minor shelf rubbing and soil on the rear panel, and has a pinpoint-sized hole near the top of the dustjacket turnover, but is otherwise without tears. The price of $2.75 is at the top of the dustjacket flap, with a small black rectangular inked spot wih the numbers 428 just above, and wth the words "An Ariel Easy Reading Book" between the two. Fine. INCREASE RABBIT.
