Octavo, ix, 254pp., profusely illustrated in color and b/w. A truly exceptional copy, signed and inscribed by Sir Edmund HIllary (1919-2008) as well as by his first wife, Louise (1930-1975), also an author, who would lose her life in a plane crash near Kathmandu airport). It is inscribed on the title page to Campbell Norsgaard, the nature cinematographer who worked for National Geographic, among other groups. and who accompanied the HIllarys on a trip to Alaska in 1962. The inscription reads "To Campbell Norsgaard to remind you of our expedition in Alaska and some good times together - Ed HIllary / Louise Hillary". The book has been recased by Starr Bookworks in a remarkable striated marbled paper that echoes the sharp mountain ridges in the Palacios-drawn endpaper maps, and using the original silver-stamped blue spine title panel on the new spine. The book is housed in a matching marbled-paper covered slipcase, with the title panel repeated. This is a wonderful copy. Small octavo, vi, 151pp., including a five-page list of subscribers. This is the original edition of this early and very interesting history of Amena, a Dutchess County town on the border of Connecticut, and contains information on the "Nine Partners Patent" and "The Oblong", an index, and information on early families. I am rating this copy as fair to good only. It is originally from the library of the Drew Seminary for Women, in Carmel, New York, founded in 1866, and has its inked stamp on the endpapers, plus other local names on blank pages, The title page and one of the index pages have been reinserted, and several strips of clear tape are visible on the reverse of the title page. A number of pages have brown stains, a few pages have been scarred by a rusty paper clip. The book is bound in blind-stamped dark cloth, gilt title, edges worn, spine worn and frayed. However, as a redeeming factor, the book is inscribed by the author: "JNo Reed From Nelson Reed" on the front free endpaper. EARLY HISTORY OF AMENIA (signed).

Large square octavo, 9.5 x 9.5", unpaged, (19 French-folded leaves). There is an introduction by Gibson A. Danes, then Dean of the school of Art and Architecture at Yale, a page of comments by Paul Rand, and color illustrations for a dozen trademarks designed by Rand, including Borzoi Books, Westinghouse, IBM and Esquire Magazine. The cover design and typography are by Paul Rand; the general design and printing are by Hiram Ash, then at the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University. This copy is from Hiram Ash's own library. The book was printed in an edition of 450 copies -- a limitation not mentioned in the book but noted in a Wittenborn advertisement in "Typographica" for June, 1961, and, with reason, considered to be the scarcest of Paul Rand books. Faint age-toning to page edges else fine in heavy white wrappers printed in yellow, orange and black, and in the slightly rippled original glassine, which has two tiny tears and a couple of pinhead-sized chips.
