Octavo, unpaged; one page with the entire text of the poem, followed by 12 full - page captioned illustrations, tissue-guarded and printed recto only, by David Claypool Johnston (1799-1865), the first American satirical artist of note. A number of his drawings look ahead tothe work of Edward Gorey (see photographs). This the first book edition of a poem by a writer called "Harper", first published in the January 11,1851 issue of "Household Words", edited by Charles Dickens. The book was printed by R.M. Edwards, 129 Congress Street. Internally about fine in rubbed and worn marbled paper on boards, worn morocco spine.
