About Us
I started my bookstore in 1978, after a long period as a writer living in
Europe. The bookstore is housed in a former Masonic Hall in the village of
West Cornwall, Connecticut -- James Thurber lived here; so did Mark and Carl
Van Doren. The building is just uphill from one of Connecticut's two
remaining covered bridges, and is in the far northwestern corner of the
state.
The physical shop is usually open on Saturdays from 9 to 5, but a call ahead is a good idea, particularly in bad weather. The on-line shop is open all the time, of course.
With 45,000 or so books on the shelves, there are large selections in literature, biography, poetry, diaries and letters, art, architecture, photography, fashion and costume, natural history, cookbooks, children's books, and many other categories. However, my real specialty is books on horticulture and landscape design. I am a member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America as well as the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.
