New York: Truth Company. A run of seven issues (plus an eighth, incomplete) of this important folio-size (13 1/8" x 9 5/8") magazine, from Volume XIX, # 8 (August, 1900) through Volume XX, # 2 (February 1901), plus a seemingly incomplete issue for March 1901, pages numbered 183 through 358, and 1 through 70. These are single copies that were first hand-stitched then bound together in book form, and are now lacking covers. The first issue has chipped edges (though there is no damage to the text, and the last issue, as mentioned, seems to be incomplete. Each issue has a full-page color lithograph (mainly in fine condition), and many other color and b/w illustrations. Authors include Stephen Crane (the short story "Manacled"), Hamlin Garland, George Gissing, George Ade (first appearance of "The City of Chicago), Joaquin Miller ("The Wedding"), an article by Charles M. Skinner on Edward Potthast, Peter Newell ( "A Christmas Egg"), a section for children in each issue, and art nouveau illustrations. This collection includes the 76-page Christmas 1900 issue. Except for the light chipping and the incompleteness of the last issue as mentioned above, a very good run of this interesting magazine, disbound. (Item ID: 1543)
